Go fish! Vertigo Games, the VR publishing and development arm of the PLAION Group as well as developer InnerspaceVR are proud to reveal Another Fisherman’s Tale, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed A Fisherman’s Tale. A mind-bending VR puzzle-adventure like no other, Another Fisherman’s Tale continues the story of Bob the Fisherman, crafting a magical and moving narrative about the meaning we create in life by building and rebuilding our authentic selves.
Developed from the ground-up to maximize the capabilities of modern VR tech, Another Fisherman’s Tale introduces a set of all-new core mechanics: this time, the player’s own body is the primary puzzle to be solved, creating unconventional gameplay based on dismantling and rebuilding their in-game form. Vertigo Games has shared a launch trailer to commemorate the announcement—take a look below!
In this 5-6 hour next-gen VR adventure, we step into the shoes of Nina, the daughter of the original game’s protagonist, as she discovers models, notes and photographs that document her father’s mysterious past, as well as her own childhood. Recollecting Bob’s grandiose stories of pirates, sunken ships, treasures and mystical locations, Nina begins re-enacting his adventures and dives head-first into an imaginative world of memory and fantasy. Will she be able to separate fact from fiction and uncover the hidden truth behind the fisherman’s tale?
Featuring a total reinvention of its predecessor’s mechanics, Another Fisherman’s Tale imagines a world where YOU are the puzzle:
- DETACH limbs and hands from your body and physically control them remotely. Throw Bob’s hand across a ravine and then make it crawl to retrieve an object, or send your head elsewhere for a different view of things.
- REPLACE any of your limbs with a variety of objects to unlock new skills. Pirate hook hands allow you to climb up walls, a crab’s claw can cut through a rope in a pinch, and a fish’s tail will improve your swimming ability.
- CONTROL your environment with your puppeteering hands, picking up distant objects, items and tools and interacting with each level’s unique layout.
Speaking on the challenge of following up the success A Fisherman’s Tale, Creative Director Balthazar Auxietre of Innerspace VR stated that the goal was “to renew the gameplay and the storytelling [of the first game] while keeping key elements of a universe that has obviously reached the heart of VR gamers.” He added that the studio’s recent experiences allowed them to “pursue a new level of ambition for the A Fisherman’s Tale franchise, thanks to the multifaceted gameplay and the diversity of the models’ worlds. Everything is in place for a new adventure that will take us across the virtual oceans.”
Game Director Alexis Moroz also acknowledged the relationship between the body-manipulation gameplay of Another Fisherman’s Tale and the Greek myth of Theseus’ Boat, which imagines a ship in which all the parts are gradually replaced. After a while, the boat no longer contains any of its original parts, provoking the question: is it the same boat or a different one? “This notion is essential in a person’s life,” Moroz says. “All of our body cells are renewed after 15 years, and we also develop our mind and spirit with new experiences and new layers of knowledge built on the previous ones. Does that mean that we are really becoming someone else?”
Another Fisherman’s Tale is the sequel to A Fisherman’s Tale, winner of “Best VR Game of the Year” at AIXR 2019, “Best Interactive Content” and “Best Immersive Work” at the Munich Virtual Worlds 2019, “Best XR Experience for the Gaming Industry” at Virtuality 2019, “Best Interactive VR Project” at the Lumiere Awards 2019, as well as “Best Story & Storytelling” at Game Connection America 2019. Taking place across an assortment of magical worlds, Another Fisherman’s Tale promises a new captivating journey that asks what it means to build and rebuild ourselves through time and space.
