World War Z: Aftermath – Review

‘World War Z’ released in 2019 and made by Saber Interactive, came out swinging hard as it grew a great community on release. I bought this on day one and loved every moment that the game had to offer. A zombie survival game much like ‘Left 4 Dead’, it features 4 player co-op as you come up against hordes of the infected and have to set up defenses. As you progress through each episode in the chapter you will need to buy time for other survivors of the area to get an escape ready.

‘Aftermath’ is the latest DLC drop which we were thankful to be given a code for review. This new content adds two more chapters in the struggle against the infected which takes place in Rome and again in Kamchatka, Russia. Aftermath has also added more features in the overall game and now supports full cross-play with other platforms which is great to keep friends connected, and a new class has also been added called the ‘Vanguard’ where your character will be given a taser shield that makes slamming into hordes of enemies a breeze.

World War Z has a unique class system suitable for a lot of different play styles. Your starting gear and specialty reflect on what strategy would be most useful. I played as a Hellraiser so explosives are my main skill instead of using standard grenades. I was able to use C4 charges and claymores which can be used as extra defensive items when prepping for an incoming horde wave.

Players will be able to take part in the worldwide infection spread from locations like New York, Tokyo, Moscow, and Jerusalem. These are the base game locations and the first DLC added Marseille. If you are new to buying the game and you purchase Aftermath, luckily, it will come with the base game and the first DLC added.

Each location players visit are recreated as great visual works of art. The city streets of New York being overrun by the infected to the blistering cold of Russia, has you covered for what to expect and the sights to behold in the case of a zombie invasion. I do hope there will be more future DLC as I would love to visit more infected overrun countries.

A first-person mode has also been added in with new melee weapons featuring two-handed items like sledgehammers and dual-wielding like the sickle. There were a few little bugs I noticed while using the first-person mode with the audio though. If I was in an area where there is an alarm going off and I had turned away from the source of the noise the alarm audio would cut in and out. Nothing major but slightly irritating.

In addition to the amazing campaign World War Z offers, there is also a challenge mode where there is a set level with conditions attached such as only being able to use chainsaws while having double the horde spawns with a shortage of ammo and items to disadvantage you.

There is a PVP mode which still adds a PVE element in it as two teams will be fighting against each other while horde waves come rolling into the fight too. The PVE modes that players can find are the likes of Team Deathmatch, Domination, King Of The Hill, and Vaccine Hunt. If you want to test your skill in seeing how long you can hold out against the hordes then playing Horde mode is the game type for you as it offers a decent reward of the in-game currency which is used to upgrade classes and weapons.

The PVP does have its moments of joy and hardship though as the connection is an issue. I find that it’s bad and quite choppy but I can still rack up kills and finish with a good score. Lag does take some kills away which is always annoying in any game.

In conclusion, World War Z is a great game that I loved when it dropped in 2019, and going back and playing with the new features is making me love it all over again. For zombie-slaying fans, I would urge you to buy this game if you have not already. It is definitely going to be my game I return to in between releases as for the price it is definitely worth grabbing. For new players, you will be given 7 chapters and the stand-alone upgrade. Also, don’t forget to get that sweet Game Pass discount.
