Wingman SNES Converter – Review

I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a SNES off of SUBZERO2K to be able to test out the Wingman Converter for SNES/NES, created by Brook. They have been making converters for retro and modern consoles, all of which can be bought from https://www.brookaccessory.com/.

Unboxing the converter, you will find the attachment piece and a wire with 3 plugs, two being standard USB and one micro USB plug. It’s probably a good thing we weren’t doing an unboxing video, as everything was kept to a bare minimum, only having what is needed. It’s even missing an instruction manual, but this is located on the packaging anyway and displays how to use the converter for wired and wireless use.

The converter itself will have two cables that are used to connect to either the SNES or NES, and there is a button on the base unit that will allow syncing to Bluetooth controllers. I tested a range of controllers with the Wingman Converter using both wired USB connections and Bluetooth. Please note that the Playstation 5 controller only works via Bluetooth, whereas the Xbox controllers can work with a cable connection as well.

If you happen to have an Xbox adaptive controller, it is also supported, along with arcade-style fight sticks, so if you are aiming to play classic Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct with an arcade controller you can.

Surprisingly, the newer controllers played on older software really well. There was no input delay and no extra steps to get a controller to work – as long as the controller is connected properly it will auto map the buttons to the device, or if you choose to do so you can activate Turbo Mode and remap buttons to your preferences.

Overall the Wingman SNES/NES Converter is a great device, especially for retro system collectors. Having another option to play the classics with modern controllers is a great option, especially if you are played wirelessly. I’m sure we all remember how short controller cables are, or how difficult some of the older systems are to track down. The plug and play make it a dream to run and it does so flawlessly.
