For those that aren’t aware of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, it’s a spin-off game from the Borderlands franchise developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. Thanks to the lovely folks over at 2K ANZ who provided us early access to a preview build of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, we got to spend some time with the game which gave us full access to the Mount Craw area.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a table-top style, first-person shooter fantasy game set directly after “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep” where Tiny Tina is your dungeon master, changing the game’s world as you play.
In this preview, we had access to two of the six different classes that will be available when the game launches, “Graveborn”, and “Stabbomancer”. Graveborn is very magic-focused, sacrificing health for powerful magic attacks, whereas Stabbomancer is more of an in-your-face type, close-quarters class. These classes play very differently from each other and have their pros and cons, so it’s just a matter of picking what best suits your playstyle.
As mentioned earlier, this preview starts us in Mount Craw. This area is one of the game’s optional areas and is best suited for players at around level 9 and upwards. You’re quickly introduced to a goblin named Jar, a member of the G.T.F.O. (Goblins Tired of Forced Oppression).
After helping out my new friend Jar in freeing his fellow goblins, I was eventually introduced to my first boss encounter, a massive icy skeleton that goes by the name of Freezicles. All I’ll say here is, Freezicles is a big boy and it wasn’t an easy fight.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will still feel very familiar to anyone that’s played a Borderlands game before in terms of gameplay and over-the-top hilarious narrative while introducing new fantasy elements which makes the game feel fresh. While it does borrow gameplay elements from the Borderlands series, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is still very much its own game. The same procedurally generated loot system from the Borderlands series returns offering players a generous amount of gear and weapon combinations, though with a fantasy theme all powered by magic.
Overall, the time we spent with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has us very excited and wanting more. While at its core it’s still a Borderlands game, the introduction to new characters and enemy types, a new fantasy world to explore, and the addition of magic, we personally can’t wait for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands to drop on March 25th. 2022.
