The Expanse – A Telltale Series (Episode 2) – Review

Space is vast and seemingly endless yet your enemies will always find a way to your location. This time, we get a more hands-on approach to what space pirates are capable of and maybe we will find out what they are after. Telltale Games graces us with Episode 2, of this rather interesting space adventure ‘The Expanse’. Continuing along with Camina Drummer, we get to find out more about her and develop her relationships with the crew.

Starting out with a good amount of action and really picking up a good pace early on, I knew this episode was going to be a little more enjoyable. Being pursued by space pirates, and evading them is no easy task. The real question is, will you make the right decision and save the crew?

Unfortunately, the episode was really short as well, and I even felt like I did a good amount of exploring along with chatting with the rest of the crew. There is a little more exploring that could have been done, however. A little tip from me to you is to explore as much as possible before continuing the main story, as you might not be able to after certain points. Plenty to find that I might have missed.

In this episode, we get to experience some of the combat and capabilities of the space pirates. Much like other Telltale games, combat is quite simple yet satisfying, as you flick your analog stick in the corresponding direction and follow it up with another prompt to land that perfect shot. Otherwise, if you miss leading to multiple outcomes on your journey or worse, dying and having to restart at a checkpoint.

Combat per say wasn’t our only threat this time around. To keep this as spoiler free as possible we will just say at some point, you have to navigate yourself through a treacherous path and avoid getting detected. This leads me to believe there will be many sections with similar mechanics, and maybe so much more.

Graphically and sound design is going to be quite similar throughout, especially in this episode. With not a whole lot of change in scenery, we are in space on a spaceship, but we do get to see a bit more of space and other ships as the story unfolds. This time around we did get to enjoy some “Martian” music leading to some rather interesting outcomes depending on how you react.

Episode 2 definitely carries on with some great pacing, an interesting story and we got to experience more of what The Expanse has to offer. Again it is still on the short side when it comes to length, but short experiences are not always a bad thing, especially in this case. The Expanse: Episode 2 is still really enjoyable and gets straight to the point. See you in episode 3.
