Sam & Max Save The World Remastered (Xbox) – Review

Originally released back in 2006, ‘Sam & Max Save The World’ by Telltale Games has been re-released and remastered by Skunkape Games, and fans of the furry duo couldn’t be happier.

‘Sam & Max Save The World’ is an episodic tale that follows our heroes Sam, the dapper detective dog, and Max, the quick-witted rabbit. Each of the 6 episodes follows a different case as they solve all sorts of problems from unruly former child stars to an internet craze destroying the world itself. The story bundles some interesting stories into an overall arching narrative that plays out slowly at the start but definitely gives some interesting headway later on.

The dialogue though is a little dare I say it, boring for characters that have over the years oozed with charm. While a lot has been censored for the good, some of the other dialogue moments just fall flat. I do, however, like some of the subtle adult humour slipped in.

Sam & Max is a story adventure game, so there aren’t that many controls to learn as a majority of it is walking around talking and interacting with items that lead to the progression of the story in a very point-and-click manner.

For a remaster and being on console, I still found the controls a bit clunky, with you having to really aim for that target box to trigger the commands for using or interacting with an item. Overall, it just didn’t feel very well ported over to the controller during the whole playthrough.

Fortunately, you can highlight what is interactable at the click of a button too which is very handy. I liked the problem-solving component as most were not as straightforward as you would think, often requiring you to do something else to create a chain event.

The overhaul on the graphics are quite impressive though and I couldn’t help but be slightly enthralled with seeing what little funny details would pop up in each environment they were thrown into. The dynamic lighting is much better with rays crossing areas and shadows being cast more realistically.

Their 3D rendered characters blend well with the cel-shaded style in the cut scenes and each is packed with interesting things to look at. The music too is impressive with jazzy and whimsical upbeat tunes to fit perfectly with their shenanigans.

Overall, Sam & Max Save The World remastered is an enjoyable reskin of the original game. The graphics are fresh and the music is fabulous. Despite the average-at-best dialogue, the game really tries to pull in audiences of all levels, and it just works. This is one game that is a good time, for all that like point and click adventures.
