Predator: Hunting Grounds (Xbox Series X) – Review

Are you one of the lucky people who grew up watching Predator movies and thought how could I be one of the predators or one of the poor humans running around with the predators? Well, thanks to Iconic and Sony Interactive Entertainment you can do this and it’s just as you would imagine. MKAU Gaming has done a full review on this title before which you can read a more detailed review here but if you want to know how this title runs on the Xbox Series X then you have come to the correct place.

The main issue I had with this title on the Xbox Series X was random crashes and it was not whilst surfing around the menu. It was when I was deep in the jungle the game would randomly freeze and then proceed to crash back to the Xbox home screen, which was quite frustrating whilst you are trying to level up and unlock new content for your fireteam/predator. I hope an update will be given soon to stop this from happening.

The other issue I was having was not so much the developer’s fault but finding games, if you set it to “No Preference” it would search for a game that would be found relatively quickly. If you set it to “Predator” however, you will sit there for a long time finding a game which probably would not be too bad if you had a squad you were linked up with and taking turns.

The last thing I would love to see is more variations from the missions for the fire team. There only seemed to be a couple and it started feeling repetitive.

I needed to play around with the controls a little with this title. The sensitivity felt super slow compared to some other titles like this, so I needed to boost that up so it felt a little more natural and fluid, which might not be for everyone but it’s something I noticed. I recommend doing the tutorial which shows you the basics for predator gameplay and will help a little if needed as a bit is going on with the predator gameplay. The fire team gameplay is more or less like every other FPS out there with the movement and shooting.

I want to take you down a little trip back to 1987, if you are like me and were not even alive back then but love the movies, when you launch this title and are sitting on the menu, you get to listen to the main theme from the movie, which was a giant nod and got me keen to launch into the jungle. When you deploy into the jungle the comms from the leader were great and weren’t too much that they were off-putting.

There was something about killing the enemies but then hearing your teammate being opened up by the predator’s wrist blades was both super cool and super frightening knowing you are probably next on its hit list.

The weapons and everything all sounded like there was some decent work put into them and not just a random audio file dragged onto them that sounded generic. I didn’t hear or might have missed it, but I wanted to hear some predator-clicking noises to scare me into running.

I was quite surprised by the attention to detail put into the visuals in this game, like the predator’s character model looked stunning with the different variants you could apply to make it your own. The fire team models looked a little more basic but still enough detail there that you weren’t sitting there wondering why. I loved the jungle terrain you get to adventure around as the fire team or the predator, the thickness made it great for the nighttime missions where you didn’t know where the predator could be lurking.

I would love to see more people involved with this game reducing the wait times to get into a game if you are running solo as it’s a fun little game to kill some time on. The developers need to work on releasing an update for the crashes on the Series X as it became a regular thing and made it hard to even want to boot this title back up, but because I was having fun I did. I can see this title being super successful if the developers work on dropping regular content and keeping the player base interested.
