It’s finally a new horror title that does not feel like the others. Developer and self-publisher Jumpy Unit have made the latest horror titles with Ominous. It’s an online thriller/horror title for four players and you must collaborate with your team members to face monsters and get out of the dimensions back to safety.
I loved the idea of this title in the tutorial so it’s split into 4 dimensions and being online-based needs four players. You need to go and find the items to rebuild the portal to get everyone into one dimension to win the game.
While you are adventuring you will find things like batteries and oil that you can take back to the HQ and craft and make money off with the vending machine which can upgrade your equipment like your torch. The tutorial was relatively quick and I feel like it would be more stressful once you have monsters lurking in the hallways.
From what I could see in the tutorial the controls felt quite simplistic, needing to use your basic W, A, S, and D as your movement and then E as an interaction. I didn’t need to move controls around as it meshed quite well. I’m hoping when you see a bad guy your camera might shake and make the movement side of things a little harder but we will see in the future.
I can’t comment too much about the audio, apart from the sounds of drawers and doors opening and shutting having the same sound. There didn’t seem to be background music and the tutorial was not a loud experience; it might be a little different in an actual game. There was no voice dialogue in the tutorial so you just had to read the prompts that would come up.
The first thing you think about when you see a horror game is dark and gloomy which was not so much the case with this title, don’t get me wrong there are still dark locations but it’s not like the entire game is dark and you’re feeling the wall to get anywhere. The environment was well done with the hallways being dark enough to make it spooky but not too dark. Some rooms were dark and gloomy and you needed the torch, and others were like a normal room nice and bright.
The items you could collect, purchase, or craft were not bad. I would have loved to see more textures put into them to bring them up to the rest of the game, with the semi-realistic feel the items looked like they were rushed. Unfortunately with the servers in the current state, I could not even see one of the bad guys that are supposed to make you jump, hopefully at some point, I’ll be able to.
I would love to see this game become popular as the idea behind it sounds and looks awesome and I don’t think I’ve seen a horror game with the same idea. I would have loved to get into some online sessions but I will keep checking that over the next couple of weeks to see if we have any luck.
