Mistery (Steam) – Review

Welcome to a game where survival from monsters and your allies is key. No one can be trusted. I bring you Mistery, developed and published by Game Frontier. Now, let’s dive into the deception and win it all!

With a massive containment breach around ground zero and a mist that feels heavy to the touch, hiding monsters from sight just waiting to pounce. Monsters won’t be the only thing to fear as some survivors will hide their true form. You will be face-to-face with up to nine other players, completing objectives and surviving the nights while avoiding going insane from the mist. The top-down perspective with the added deceitful gameplay throws everything to the wind. Mistery was also created by the SCP Foundation bringing entities to the gaming world.

Once you have booted up the game you are met by an optional tutorial. The tutorial teaches you all the basic movement mechanics while teaching you the function of items and how to win the game. Once you have completed the tutorial you have the option to train which shows you in-depth videos on the basic and more advanced game mechanics, giving you the best possible chance to understand the game and go in fighting.

Mistery has two maps each with different game modes, the first map is From the Mist, which is a six to nine player deductive, PvPvE with three classes, one being the Operator whose goal is to collect Batteries that charge the beacon which provides light and safety from monsters at night, but don’t think you are safe as a wave of monsters will break in and try to wipe you all out. The second class is the Alternate whose main goal is to prevent the beacon from being activated.

Lastly, the Insurgent whose goal is to kill all players. The second map is Black-out which is located down an abandoned well forming an underground base.

With four to nine players, your goal is to find and activate the locator and escape through the portal to safety, but it won’t be easy. Finally, the third game mode that is on the From the Mist map is Containment Breach with one to four players, your goal is to eliminate all 3 entities or escape by boat after eliminating at least 1 entity, and this is the hardest as your sanity goes down much faster and the only way to recover it is using the campfire.

At least that’s if the monsters will let you do anything, even on the lowest difficulty it is hard with four difficulty levels ranging from Easy (first time), Normal, Hard, and finally Lethal. You also have up to 13 characters to choose from with two being locked through the Battlepass. Each character has their special ability which can be vital for certain situations.

One thing that was quite annoying was the lack of an Oceana server making the ping quite high and making it very difficult to play.

Controls were very simple with the classic WASD for movement, shift for sprint, E for interacting, a mouse for melee/shooting and rotating your character around, and a couple of others like Space for rolling, R for reloading ranged weapons, and 1 through 6 for using items. This game does not yet have controller support so only a mouse and keyboard currently.

For Mistery being a top-down game it has some great visual mechanics with throwable grenades and Molotovs giving off a realistic sense of danger, even when the mist rolls in making your field of vision very low. The monster’s mechanics and movement were very fluid and functioned very well with some monsters burrowing underground or teleporting or spitting acid. Mistery has a great atmosphere and it’s shown widely throughout the game with fantastic visuals during the daytime and transforming to a horror theme by night.

The sound was quite well made with explosions and guns firing in the distance giving off a great sense of realism, even monsters in the room next to you listening to their footsteps and groaning. Without an Oceana server currently, it was annoying not being able to understand other players in voice chat, essentially deleting a part of the game. Otherwise, the proximity chat worked very well.

Overall Mistery is quite a fun game with numerous hours of enjoyment. It’s not a game I could see myself playing indefinitely as there isn’t enough content or player base to keep playing, otherwise, Mistery has great promise with exciting game modes for everyone to enjoy. With great visual and sound effects bringing the overall feel of the game up so far even the variety of monsters and entity bosses, I’d love to see more content added to give the game a bit more variety, even an Oceana server but otherwise a great game.
