Ecstasy is a powerful emotion that can take over if you aren’t careful. Try not to give in to temptation and desire as you never know what you might do under such influence. In ‘Lust from Beyond: M Edition’ you attempt to do just that. Will you be able to control it or will you fall into peril and let it take over?
Lust from Beyond: M Edition, developed by Movie Games Lunarium, is a new version of the cult, survival horror ‘Lust from Beyond’. Allowing for players who are wanting to enjoy the Lovecraftian horror for its mystery narrative, and atmosphere rather than explicit content. Embark on this first-person survival horror and descend into madness, and uncontrollable desires.
You are Victor Holloway, an antiquarian who seems to be living a normal life until he starts getting visions of an unordinary and sinister land. A land where there’s no difference between pain and pleasure. You then set out to find out and unravel the mystery of these visions and dreams, meeting a doctor in the town of Bleakmoor. Before you know it you’ve joined the esoteric Cult of Ecstasy, a cult devoted to ecstasy and the dimensions beyond.
Lust’ghaa, The mythical Land of Ecstasy, is a dimension beyond reality, at least that’s how it seems as these lines become very blurred. The things that lurk in here are not anything you’ve imagined before, grotesque and what some might even call beautiful. Fight, hide, solve puzzles, and do what you must to find answers. Most of all try to survive.
Depending on some of your decisions made, or secrets you find along the way could lead to different endings so choose wisely and explore at your own pace, or even play through again and make different choices. Although there wasn’t a whole lot of variation in the decisions you could make, the story still had many twists and unexpected outcomes.
I always enjoy a game with puzzles, exploration, and action, even though the combat comes later on in the game, which satisfies a small amount of the much-desired want for action. The mechanics felt pretty standard but fluid, so not to complain about, they worked and that to me is what’s most important. Especially the fact this is a story-driven game, so getting past the puzzles and continuing to solve your mystery is what you might want. But don’t be too hasty, there are secrets to find, so explore as much as you can.
The world around you whether it is reality or Lusst’ghaa is very dark but also aesthetically pleasing to look at and explore. I found myself admiring how nice the environments look, the reflections, and the overall atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, the ambient noises, the sounds of screaming, or even moaning through some walls, will keep you curious or mortified. Everyone is different in this retrospect.
Lust from Beyond: M Edition, is an enjoyable experience, with its bizarrely painted world, atmosphere, and interesting story with many twists. However, it just left me wanting something a little more, whether it was more action or more intricate puzzles.
If you enjoy worlds or stories inspired by Lovecraft and Giger then this might just satisfy that. If you are looking for more explicit content I recommend checking out the original, but if you just want to enjoy the story and atmosphere then this is the one for you.
