What a whacky adventure ‘Golden Light’ is! You can expect a very out there experience, where everything is… meat?. Well doesn’t that sound like a tasty treat, until everything starts attacking you? This meaty game, ‘Golden Light’, developed by Mr. Pink, is an FPS, comedy horror, with roguelike elements, has a very strange atmosphere and an oddly compelling charm.
Descend into the depths of ‘The Gut’ to save your loved one or fight through various enemies hiding amongst props that will try their darndest to kill you if they get any sign of your presence. Use the many weapons around the place or just run away as you attempt to find the keys that unlock the elevator to the next floor. The premise can be quite confusing with at times, a lot of doubt about what needs to be done being the forefront of your mind.
Fighting is a very viable option to survive though you want to be careful, your weapons will eventually rust and break. It is definitely best to eat them to gain health. That’s right, eat your weapons as everything or almost everything in this game is made out of meat but be careful what you eat, some things might have awful side effects, that might be useful in other ways.
As challenging as the game felt, once you get used to how things work it gets a bit easier to grasp, and when you do feel you are getting used to the mechanics you can up your difficulty with a few options. If you just want to have some fun bring a friend along and play in co-op or versus them in PVP.
The very grainy look of the game adds to its weird horrific charm, and with its simple but rogue-like level designs. With slight variation in layout and enemy location, amongst the horrid enemy models gameplay will definitely keep you on edge and wondering “What the heck is going on?”
Throughout the game there’s a strange voice talking to you, asking or telling you to do things, like “Hit yourself” or “Don’t take my gold” along with telling you about the strange things happening around you and the obscene scenario/story. Some of the things this voice says or asks are very out there albeit amusing or damn right horrid.
Whacky is how I would describe the way this game is, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it was somewhat enjoyable regardless with its strange but unique premise. It was a weird experience, to say the least, but not an overall terrible one.
