God of War (PC) – Review

Spiderman isn’t the only one who’s far from home. Our favorite anti-hero, the God killer, Kratos, is very far from home. He’s been in Midgard for the last 3 years but now he’s finally moved out of his cramped, underperforming shack to play with the big boys in the penthouse suite. That’s right God Of War (2018) has finally made its way onto PC. Developed by Santa Monica Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Kratos has never looked so good.

Now I could go through the nitty-gritty details of the story, but I mean it’s been nearly 4 years since releasing on the ps4, and I’m sure most of you reading this have somewhat played it yourself on the Playstation 4 or even watched gameplay/ watched one of your favorite streamers play it. If you haven’t, here’s a quick rundown.

Kratos’ now second wife has passed and he’s set with the task of delivering her ashes to the top of the mountain, with “the help” of Atreus or “Boy” as he’s so famously and fondly known. Their journey, in true GoW fashion, is no easy task however, constantly running into high tier threats like dragons, trolls, and Norse gods, Kratos must not only protect his son but mentor him along the way.

This has got to be the best PC port out there, it was smooth, there were no bugs at all, and with the power of an Asus Strix 3070TI, AMD 5800x, and 32GB RAM, it ran on 1080p ultra settings while streaming at around 100fps. The stream did drop frames however when we got into some intense battles but capping them at 60 prevented any further issues. Running it off-stream I had no issues maxing out fps at 120.

The biggest bonus of it being now on pc is that the power of a higher tier system can show this game off in its true glory, with all the added graphical settings, true 4k, and DLSS and FSR, even low tier systems can run the game somewhat well if not better than the Playstation. The way the game played on PC was great, it didn’t feel like a mobile game like some ported games do.

The controls on keyboard and mouse were a little janky, but with the G502 I was able to map some of the more useful buttons accordingly beforehand, trying to remember how to activate Spartan’s rage cost me a life or 2 on one of the hardest settings. I would recommend playing on a controller however it isn’t impossible to do so on M&KB, it just takes some getting used to. Having remappable buttons is a huge bonus.

Could this be the end of Playstation exclusives? God Of War has to have been one of PlayStation’s biggest exclusive franchises and now that that has come to PC I’m not sure what else is really left.

We could be seeing the end of the ‘console wars’ which is amazing as almost every game has cross-play now, and if the single-player exclusives like God Of War start coming through then I think we can safely say it may just be over.

God of War in all its glory and beauty was amplified by the power of my PC, and with the Norse Mythos being one of my favorites I couldn’t have been happier. This has gotten me even more hyped for the next installment of the GoW franchise and I can’t wait to see Kratos kicking more god-like ass.
