Go Home Annie (Steam) – Review

Croatian-based development studio Misfit Village and Lithuania-based publishers Nordcurrent Labs have brought the latest and greatest in twisted psychological thrillers which will keep you wanting more based in the SCP Universe. Go Home Annie: An SCP Game will leave you never quite knowing what is going to happen next but how the story is delivered will have you biting for more.

You are put into the shoes of the young female known as Annie and you have been tasked with recreating this scene in this house where you need to find the mysteries that lurk below, little do you know they keep wiping your memory so you don’t remember it, but it’s something from your childhood which the Director is trying to unlock. You have some friends who also work at the same place who give you little hints on what is happening and why they’re doing it to you.

Once you start listening you need to navigate around the facility and you will start finding out more about your mother and father and why the house is so necessary. There are some amazing puzzles lined up in this game and a rich storyline which I loved. You get to meet some weird and wonderful creatures along the way.

I needed to do some research into the SCP Universe before writing up this review and needless to say, I was intrigued with what I had found. Learning that an SCP is an object, creature, anomaly, or humanoid that breaks the rules of nature and anything that stands for Secure, Contain, and Protect has me keen to learn more. I was more interested in why something with that meaning behind it would have a replication division built into their headquarters.

I’m starting to sound like a broken record when talking about loving simplistic controls. However, for games like this, it lets you sink further into the title without worrying about doing multiple different things at once making sure you move further in. The controls were basic which complemented the title well you had your basic movement controls, and then your basic camera controls with the occasional interaction added in there when needed, but you didn’t need to think too much outside of the game about what you were doing and the on-screen prompts at times would help if you got a bit lost or somehow forgot how to play the game.

The developers were on point with the lighting and textures in this title; everything looked how it should have looked and small things like running across the water and having the glow from the moon. Everything felt like it was fine-tuned and finished before delivery.

This is the first title that I walked around and didn’t think could be improved by being darker or with better textures; it was just complete, which was great to see from the title. I loved the work the developers had done to the various creatures at the facility to make them look so alive and creepy.

I was impressed with the detail put into the voice acting in this title. It sounded like real voice actors and not just AI generated that we are starting to see more and more of. The voice acting in these styles of games can make or break the game as you expect the main character to be a little messed up and a little shaky which they did an awesome job of creating with Annie.

There was nothing in the game that felt repetitive when it came to the audio and it was a super enjoyable experience. There were certain scenes where you would get this creepy feeling of background music that painted the scene. Otherwise, you were listening to voice dialogue most of the time.

Go Home Annie: An SCP Game is a perfect title if you want something to sink some time into over a weekend, you can quite easily play from start to finish and not feel like it’s dragging on. If you are like me, however, you will be wanting more from the storyline. You can pick up Go Home Annie: An SCP Game on Steam for AUD 29.50.
