Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between – Review

‘Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between’ is an oddly relaxing and meditative game created by Silverstring Media INC and published by Fellow Traveller.

The game plays like a point-and-click adventure to a small degree as it follows travelers that meet and have rich conversations with other fellow travelers from across the lands. These encounters will have you dive deep emotionally and make you stop and really reflect on things. There are a few different ways to meet these travelers. At the start, you will be able to meet them from picking up hitchhikers while driving your car or they will be passengers on a train that you can converse with.

Both starting journeys to pick from offer a relaxing travelling experience. You will have control over the car by changing lanes and speeding up or down but at no point is it actually needed to do either options. You will see other cars or trucks on the road but will never catch up to or pass them as you drive on a highway at night. The car’s radio will play some relaxing music as you see the hitchhikers by the side of the road. Once you pick them up (as creepy as that sounds) they will then appear in the car and will strike up a conversation which can have some deep back and forth until they reach their destination.

On the train, you can switch seats around the carriage and interact with other passengers. They will also give you some good choices to make during conversations. Even with a lack of radio on the train, there is a constant background loop of music that you can just sit and listen to while staring out the train window, looking at the night sky. You will also be able to unlock other journeys through a moonlit park and even an airport lounge room.

The graphics for the game come off as pre-rendered models that will have a slight glitch to them. They will go out of sync and change colours in small portions. This was a great choice of style for the game as I can’t imagine a more solid graphical choice working as well with the glitching animations. The night sky is definitely a work of masterpiece for me and is probably why I find it so relaxing; a star-filled sky with a bright moon and Aurora Polaris is a work of art.

In conclusion, Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is not a game to be rushed when playing. It is one that you should play when you have the time to invest in the conversations that await you. The journeys can be short or long depending on how invested you are or if you just like having it running for a relaxing ASMR feel while you unwind, it can even also offer that. For what it is and offers it is a solid game and definitely worth experiencing.
