Dungeons of Hinterberg (Steam) – Review

Microbird Games and Curve Games have created a great mixture of adventure RPG games with a splash of dungeon crawling in the beautiful Austrian Alps in a township called Hinterberg which has become a tourist hotspot for the new supernatural happenings. This title is called Dungeons of Hinterberg and you are in for a treat.

Luisa is a burnt-out law trainee who wants something different with her life so we start the adventure in the back of a taxi heading to Hinterberg little did she know she would be put up against supernatural beings armed with a sword and information pamphlet. You meet some great friends along the line who will help you get used to the game and help you where they can to conquer all the dungeons and beat the bosses.

I was a little surprised there was not more control of the stats like I could not buff things up manually it all seemed to be done automatically which is probably for the better because anyone who games with me knows I always put the stats in the wrong place and end up with some super strong useless warrior.

I was super confused loading up this title and got the notification that it was best played on the controller so naturally I plugged the controller in I’m still confused why this prompt came up because this game is so much more fun on keyboard and mouse. The controls were super simple on the keyboard and mouse and felt like there was more control of the game. The combat system was super simple and efficient with pressing “Spacebar” for dodging and then “Right Click” for a heavy attack and “Left Click” for a light attack and naturally, I was smashing heavy attacks and slashing through all the enemies.

Dungeons of Hinterberg has completely changed my mind on what you would find in games that have dungeons involved I would normally see the word dungeon and think of smashing through the darkness that is in front of you but this is the complete opposite you have these bright and vibrant colours everywhere in this comic book feeling cartoon feel and I was all for it. I would have loved to see more time put into the character models.

The faces reminded me of Tomb Raider back on the PlayStation 1. Still, I’m a strong believer that graphics don’t make a game and the graphics definitely did not ruin this title. The bright colours made for such a fun casual game to sit down and enjoy and took me back to reading some great comics with the colouring or sitting down and enjoying one of my favourite anime.

The sounds were super basic in this title but they got the point across. I would have loved to see some voiced dialogue to go with all the dialogue in the game but unfortunately, you got this random popping sound each time there is a dialogue which gets super repetitive and makes you want to hit “CTRL” and fast forward through it all without reading it but I didn’t want to miss some of the stories.

When you were in the dungeons you got this great upbeat electronic music which got you in the mood to kick some ass with the enemies and the bosses at the end of the dungeons. I would love to see some voice acting in a possible further update to add to the story in this title.

If you are chasing a title where you can really settle into your chair and spend some time adventuring around the beautiful township of Hinterberg then Dungeons of Hinterberg is designed for you it’s the perfect mix of adventure and dungeon crawling and with its bright and vibrant colours had to me hooked.
