‘Broforce Forever’ is the long-awaited free update to 2015’s ‘Broforce’, the most patriotic game ever made by Devolver Digital and Freelives. Broforce is a love letter to action movies by having an action pack roster of characters from a span of classic movies.
This means you and your friends will be throwing out references to movies and guessing what the actual name of the character is like ‘Rambo’ is renamed Rambro as you travel across locations to fight terrorists, aliens, and even the spawns of hell. There is not really any storyline to this run-and-gun sidescroller just mindless chaos and enjoyment to be had. We don’t need a back story on why Rambro is teaming up with RoBro Cop to kill terrorists it is wacky and fun.
Broforce Forever supports four-play local and online coop with drop-in and out play. It is a must-play with friends as it is filled with pure chaos. The free update which is titled ‘Forever’ comes with new bonus levels and six new playable characters such as Xebro (Xena), Demolition Bro, Burt Brommer from the Tremors series, Seth Brondle from The Fly, Desperabro from Desperado, and finally Broffy The Vampire Slayer.
The online co-op can feel a bit unstable at times with delayed input and lag spikes, so if possible I would strongly suggest playing local co-op to avoid connection issues.
The game is a side-scrolling action-packed throwback to retro titles like ‘Contra’, as you progress you will come across people being held captive when you free them you will change the character you are randomly given and be rewarded an extra life, each character has unique skills and perks for example if you are playing as the Brominator you are able to shed the meat suit and run around as the T-800 skin that allows you to take extra hits of damage as it is one hit death.
In terms of difficulty, there are areas that may offer a good challenge depending on the boss fight but if you want the ultimate experience you can throw it on hard or take on the IronBro mode which means one death per main character. When you have exhausted the roster it is game over.
One major feature I love about the game is that you can destroy the ground and make your own pathways while letting gravity deal with the hard-to-tackle enemies by destroying the ground they are standing on as you watch them fall to their doom.
The graphics are sticking with the retro style and pixelated style of the 80’s arcade games. I personally couldn’t ever see it in another engine or having an upgrade that fits perfectly with the whole game and the vibe it is going for. The audio is mainly focused on the introduction of unlocked characters or boss fights. There is not much background music to set the mood and get you hyped for the running and gunning but it is not needed as the game is a blast without a rocking backing track to come with it.
In conclusion, Broforce Forever is a game everyone can easily play as it does not really have a difficulty scaling system and it is honestly just so fun and easy to pick up and sink time into while having a laugh with friends. Devolver Digital has always had a solid track record of amazing games and Broforce is high up on the list for me.
Sure, it has pixel graphics, but it is just so much fun bringing those retro feels. I am glad they didn’t try to add some form of storyline to the game as it would have taken away from the fast-paced experience. I remember playing this with friends when it first came out and all day we were making movie references to the characters and having such a blast. It is great to see that the title got a big update and is now back in the spotlight of new releases. it is available now on all platforms and is also included in Gamepass.
