Beat Souls – Review

Jam to the rhythm of the music in the vibrant cyberpop world of ‘Beat Souls’. Developed by Eastasiasoft and Zoo Corporation, they bring a new rhythm game to your fingertips.

In this rhythm game, aim for high scores while enjoying the beat of the music along with your “Otomo” companions, laying the Rhythm Yokai to rest, all while putting on a killer performance. In this neon cyberpunk-styled world wrapped in colourful anime aesthetics; make friends along the way but also make sure you are avoiding or dodging anything that might throw you off your groove.

Beat Souls will have you battle through 30 stages with adjustable difficulty, starting on normal which progressively becomes a little more challenging as you progress, and hard when you want to step up and challenge yourself more. Avoid obstacles aka ‘The Noise’ by jumping, and sliding to the left or right while you collect spirits to build up combos for that nice high score.

Acquire new characters along the way, each with their own unique skills that might help you achieve a higher score. Finally, you can challenge yourself in ‘Infinite Hell’ Mode to see how long you can last and the score you can achieve, or even get to the top of the leaderboard maybe?

A very vibrant game indeed, at times maybe a little too vibrant, making it hard to process what’s going on, and to figure out your next move. Being a rhythm game there’s got to be a nice selection of music, unfortunately, with there being only 2 artists the music is limited and very similar throughout with slight variation between characters.

Also, it should be noted that it didn’t feel like the collection of Yokai or the dodging of obstacles was in sync with the beat.

Achievements! With this game being developed/published by Eastasiasoft you can expect the achievements to be quite easy to obtain, which they were. As rhythm games go this one didn’t quite hit the spot, not when there are so many well-rounded ones. This one is though just another quick easy completion for achievement hunters.
