‘A Way To Be Dead’ is an asymmetric, multiplayer game much like Dead By Daylight, Friday the 13th, and In Silence. Developed and Published by Crania Games, A Way To Be Dead is still in the early access phases, and although I tried multiple times to find a match as Dr. Riley (the killer) and as a survivor, I was unsuccessful in finding any other players. We did reach out to the developers for some extra codes to set up our own lobbies but we heard nothing back from them, so this is going to be an interesting “preview”.
So… according to the Steam description, you can play as either Dr. Riley who is trying to hunt down the tragic survivors lost and hiding in his abandoned, zombie-infested hospital, the survivors who are trying to escape, or the zombies, who are just trying to get a feed. A Way to be Dead is set in the same universe as ‘Roots of Insanity’ another title released by Crania Games and shows the events from Roots of Insanity in a different light.
From the description, it looks as if there is a leveling/skill system like Dead by Daylight, where you can create super-survivors or mutate Dr. Riley to a point where he is unstoppable. If this sounds like the sort of game you play, you can pick it up from Steam for a low price of $9AUD.
From the trailer and press work, the graphics seem pretty top notched with eerie and just straight creepy-looking environments. It’s a pity we were not able to get stuck into it as I can see this game freaking out a lot of MKAU staff with its dark and gritty colour palette. The music in the title screens, while typical of most horror-type games, sets the scene perfectly of what should be a team vs killer scenario.
Unfortunately, since I am unable to fully play the game, I cannot put a score or outline the pros and cons, so this review will be revised as soon as we are able to play properly.
