2084 Review – Early Access

2084 is a first person shooter with great graphics. At the time of writing this review 2084 is in Early Access so there might be more features and content implemented at a later date.

Launched into Early Access last week, 2084 is a fast-paced first-person shooter with hacking elements. Basically, while you’re mowing down hordes of enemies in grimy cyberbunk environments whilst also manipulating the surrounding environment to expedite the process.

There are two modes in the form of “story” and “endless”, The current build is based on the results of a 72-hour game jam, and the studio commented that it will be about 16-24 months before it launches into 1.0. New weapons, hacking scenarios, enemy types and more will be added during development.

2084’s story mode has you first exploring an apartment complex and then the streets shortly after. You’ll mostly be managing your health and ammo both of which can be replenished by hacking various electronics found on walls and enemies, all through a QTE that slows down time. There’s also a forward dodge skill that has a cooldown, slight puzzle elements to progress, and bosses to defeat. Keep in mind that 2084 was a game that was originally created for a game challenge that turned into a full game.

2084 isn’t finished yet, it’s a project with a lot of potential. I know there are many early access games out there already and a lot of people just want the finished product immediately, but please hear me out. Any small company has to invest a lot of time and money into creating a finished game. Wouldn’t it make sense to give people a sample of what could be to figure out how the people want the game to be in the end? Rather than completing a product that everyone is dissatisfied with? Because that’s what this is for now, and they want your input, ideas and critique.

This game has potential, but personally I’d love if there was a multiplayer option in the future. Even if it stayed single player, it’s a very fresh visual take on a shooter game.
