League of Legends fans across Australia & New Zealand have reason to celebrate today, as Pentanet.GG, the Perth-based Oceanic representatives at the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), qualified for the next stage of the tournament overnight, after winning three of their nine group stage matches.Their three wins against the Russian-based Unicorns of Love cemented them a spot out of their 3-team group, a result that was not predicted by the majority of international analysts. The result marks the first time an Oceanic team has ever made it out of a group stage at any official international League of Legends tournament (such as MSI or Worlds) and means the team will now face the world’s best in the next stage of the tournament. ESL Gaming Australia and Guinevere Capital, operators of the premier League of Legends tournament in Oceania, the League of Legends Circuit Oceania (‘LCO’), today announced that the LCO Playoffs, held across March 30 – April 10 was the most-watched Oceanic esports finals series this year, with 250,000 unique viewers tuning in. Over the course of the full inaugural season, a total of 750,000 unique viewers watched the league. In a close 3-1 victory, Perth-based Pentanet.GG, who have been leading the LCO ladder throughout the inaugural season, toppled newcomers to the league Peace in a 4-hour slog. Today the League of Legends Circuit Oceania (LCO), a new 8-team League of Legends (LoL) competition was unveiled by ESL and Guinevere Capital, as the premier LoL esports tournament in the Oceanic region. Starting on Tuesday, February 23rd, Oceania’s top League of Legends players will take to the Rift to compete in a new format for the region. Over the course of 8 weeks and 19 playdays, eight of the region’s best teams: ORDER, PENTANET, CHIEFS, DIRE WOLVES, LEGACY, MAMMOTH, AVANT and GRAVITAS will compete in a double round robin format, where eight teams face off against each other twice over the course of five weeks. At the conclusion of Regular Season, the bottom three teams will be eliminated. The remaining five teams advance through to a Double Elimination Playoffs running on March 30th-31st and April 6th-7th. After a year of success in competitive Oceanic League of Legends, which saw an impressive Worlds run by Legacy Esports, and multiple Oceanic players move to pursue international opportunities, the league will offer new opportunities for existing League of Legends players and teams from around the region to compete.
