Astroneer: Glitchwalkers (PC) – Review

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t stoked to jump into Astroneer’s first DLC. Welcome to Astroneer Glitchwalker!

You will embark on an epic adventure on an alternate timeline to a mysterious planet called Aeoluz, where you have been tasked to search for and find the Hacker called Bl!tZ Astroneer’s first protagonist. This will be no easy task as it is the most unique and complex planet structure to date, which makes it challenging to navigate as each biome is different and more complicated than the last.

You begin in the standard Astroneer, slowly working through the main story, which can be grueling. You need to complete a fair number of missions and resource gathering to make it to the planet’s centre and get given the mission to start the DLC, which for some might be frustrating as many want to jump right into it. Once you start the DLC mission, you are contacted by Frank, who tells you a worrying story of a rogue Astroneer who has wormed into the system and taken control.

You have a few missions that allow you to build a Ruby, one of Frank’s inventions, and get this, storms are back, and you must use the Ruby to gather and dispense storm data to learn the whereabouts of the rogue Astroneer Bl!tZ.

Once you have collected storm data from other planets, Frank sends you an in-development teleporter. Once you activate the teleporter, your known world vanishes, and a new world opens, teleporting you to another timeline, where the Hacker Bl!tZ is located. Once teleported, you lose all your research and belongings and start fresh. Although you can start researching and collecting resources again, many items have been hacked.

They can only unlock once you start progressing through the story with new items available to unlock and build. Beginning on the story, you must activate an Alpha Vault, which Frank sent, which allows you to collect an Alpha Rootkit, which can be deciphered on the Translation tool, gaining access to some hacked research unlocks.

Now, here is where it gets interesting, you must go into the dangerous storms to collect data but be warned that if you stay too long in the storm, Bl!tZ hacks your suit, cutting off your oxygen. Once you collect enough storm data, you can access storm protection going up to level 3, allowing you to stay in the storm for longer, but that is not all, as different storm dangers are going from Alpha storms to Delta and then Zeta storms posing more risk to your life.

It sounds easy once you know of Bl!tZ’s whereabouts until you slowly break through his protective walls, allowing access to the planet’s centre. Don’t even get me started on what happens next, but I’ll leave that to your imagination.

This new planet features eight new and exciting biomes that look stunning and terrifying simultaneously, with all new shapes and sizes. Even varying colour depth with biomes and hacks manipulating plants give what almost looks like a jagged static look. Otherwise, everything else is as standard as the base game.

Sound involves little besides storms and the hacks inside them. Otherwise, everything is standard to the base game.

Overall, this DLC was so fun to play, giving players a different playing experience with the game’s first protagonist and the vast plot that comes with it, including a brand-new planet full of danger. This DLC has so much potential, especially for playing with friends, as only the host needs the DLC. It’s fantastic to see Developers creating such an amazing world for all those Astroneer lovers.
