Scotland-based indie developer, Hairy Heart Games, claims to make hairy games for hairy people, and this hairy reviewer is excited to see where ‘Rallyallyally’ takes them.
Rallyallyally is a knock-out style party game with no real underlying plot however it allows up to 8 players to battle it out to ‘Push the Road’ literally over terrain to the finish line over 3 crazy rounds to crown the champion at the end! Available now on Steam, expansion into other consoles is planned for 2024.
Throughout the rounds in this only mode available currently, you will need to collect pick-ups that you can use to take out your friends in a very Mariocart-like fashion. Drop an oil barrel to make their cars spin out of control or maybe you just need a little speed boost – that comes easy with a rocket strapped to the roof of your car! Players win points based on who gets the road to the finish line, and who joins them there the quickest.
Each match is made up of 3 time-based rounds, and the person with the most points at the end of the match wins the game. The rounds can be over a bit too quickly, leaving the time limit of the rounds to feel a little redundant.
Compatible with controllers, the game is very fast-paced and it’s easy to fall behind, especially if you’re taking the time to get used to the handling of the vehicles. These cars don’t seem to have any traction control at all. This game is not at all optimised for keyboard play, though it is an option if you are willing to tough it out.
You’ll find the movement keys are not the stock standard W-A-S-D, but a bizarre Q-W-E, and I found myself feeling like I’ve never played a game with driving in it before; I couldn’t figure out how to reverse. Playing the game using an Xbox Series S controller was much easier.
The casual, low-poly art style leaves little to be desired in terms of graphics but that doesn’t stop you from losing your car in the chaos that is Rallyallyally. With 15 cars to choose from and countless colour options, customisation of your ride is readily available if you need something that will really stick out.
The goofy menu sound effects and in-game 16-bit-style music track fits the 90s-esque feel of the graphics in-game and in the menus. The combination gives me a sense of nostalgia, throwing me back to playing other racing or party games on my Nintendo growing up.
To summarise, Rallyallyally is a fun time-waster if you’re looking for a quick, fast-paced game to play solo or with your friends. At the time of writing, the game only has one mode; Push the Road, which leaves it feeling repetitive, but hopefully, this game gets some more dev time, and we can see some new modes come to the game in the future.
