Port Royale 4: Buccaneers DLC – Review

Port Royal 4 is a strategy civilization game based around keeping your country alive, however, the newly added DLC Buccaneers allows you to become pirates, allowing you to pillage and adds more content to the already pretty expansive base game.

Developed by Gaming Minds Studio and released on the 21st of May 2021, you are now able to access a new area of content all about pillaging, looting, and increasing your infamy across the seas.

Having played a brief game without the newly added DLC, it added a fun aspect to the game in certain areas, such as capturing your opponent’s ships and building your own privateer fleets with pirate aesthetics.

On top of this, you can take over other towns and add them to your existing territory. All aspects of this DLC are pirate aesthetic orientated, even the structuring and items were pirate based. This includes your ships, the way you function within the game to increase your infamy, missions, objectives, and the looting and claiming of other territories or ships.

The only complication I seem to find about this DLC is that on the original release, many reviews on the Steam page advising people weren’t able to install the game or start it up. Since then, it seems like there are many solutions and it looks to be fixed, however, the negative reviews that mainly dictate this DLC all seem to relate to installation complications.

The DLC itself was enjoyable, however, and I enjoyed exploring the map, construction, and learning everything within the Buccaneer DLC. I’ll probably be heading back to the base game and exploring the campaign after striving my best to allow my Dutch territory to survive.
